The Pumpkin Spice Latte has become a stable of fall.  It’s known as the “basic girl drink” and the minute the weather changes from scorching hot to breezy, people flock to their local caffeine dealer for their fix.

But, is it really healthy for your body?

A 16-ounce medium-sized drink contains 380 calories, 14 grams of fat and 50 grams of sugar.

Yahoo Health did some investigating and found out what happens to your body when you drink the sweet potion:

  • There are 12 teaspoons of sugar, so you’re brain begins craving the sugary drink like someone who is addicted to cocaine or heroin says New York City certified dietitian-nutritionist Jessica Cording tells Yahoo Health.
  • Your pancreas works harder to produce insulin to break down the sugar into glucose for your body’s cells says registered dietitian-nutritionist Sonya Angelone. If you’ve got too much glucose, it gets rejected and the extra sugar is stored as… FAT.
  • You’re liver works hard as well because the 50 grams of sugar and whipped cream are pretty much 100% of your daily recommended intake, so you’re liver is absorbing all the glucose.
  • Triglyceride levels and over time, they may clog blood vessels.
  • You’re blood pressure and pulse increase about 15 minutes after drinking the coffee.
  • The plus side- it contains 14 grams of protein, which boost muscles and leaves you feeling full for longer.

But don’t be deterred PSL lovers- everything in moderation.

If you’re indulging in the scrumptious fall-flavored drink once a week (and eating healthy) then you should have “no problem.”

Just don’t overdo it – we won’t be looking for a cure when you turn into a pumpkin!
