We have a happy update to our story about local Little Village “paletero” Fidencio Sanchez.

So far, more than $250,000 has been raised to help Sanchez retired.

A man who happened to be at the right place and at the right time saw the 89-year-old do his everyday job, struggling to push his heavy cart down the street. He felt compelled to begin a gofundme campaign to raise funds for the vendor.

He snapped a picture and posted it online.

The original fundraising goal was $3,000 but it completely surpassed that in just a few days going VIRAL.

“God sent it at the time we needed it the most,” his granddaughter, Dulce Perez, says.

Sanchez lost his one and only daughter in late July. She was his main means of support.

Jose Loera, the man who started the campaign, is pretty proud of the outcome.

“On the optimistic side i was thinking he might get $200, maybe get him a week off, and [instead] we got him retired. It’s pretty awesome,” he said.

In an interview posted to Facebook, Sanchez reveals he is very happy but plans to donate 50% of proceeds to his local church.

Since he has decided to keep working, a Pennsylvania company has donated a solar-powered cart to make his job easier.
