The Vampire Diaries is gearing up for their final season and fans have one question, “is Delena end game?”

While most of us are hoping the answer is “yes” and that the writers will resurrect Elena (Nina Dobrev) so that she lives happily ever after with Damon, that isn’t necessarily what Ian Somerhalder has in mind.

In fact, he doesn’t think that’s a good idea at all…. and it isn’t just because he once dated Nina in real life and they quite a show-altering falling out. (FYI: Nina has not confirmed that she will be returning for the final season yet but she is “in talks”!)

“This poor young girl from this tiny town … she lost everyone she’s ever loved, she burned her house down, she’s now in a box,” Somerhalder tells TVLine. “These guys have ruined her life, yet everybody wants her to end up with one of them.”

True. But love is love right?

Wrong. The whole show originally focused on the “love” and I say that loosely, between brothers. And Ian thinks that’s how it should end.

“I don’t think either one of them should get the girl,” he said. “They don’t deserve the girl. But they have each other,” he added.

So instead, Somerhalder believes that Mystic Falls, a town that has been through hell and back because of these guys, should go back to being a warm town filled with humans who just want to live and succeed.

And yes, Elena is human so we’re assuming he’s also referring to the love of his life.

That my friends, shows just how far Damon has come. He loves her so much, he can let her go so that she lives a long happy and human life.

Now, we don’t know if that’s actually how the show will end and knowing Julie Plec, it’s probably too optimistic, but we can dream.
